Elementary and Secondary Schools
The Council Bluffs Community School District, home of the "1998-99
Iowa Superintendent of the Year", serves families in Carter Lake,
Crescent and Council Bluffs. More than 10,000 students attend the three
high schools, two junior high schools and 14 elementary schools. This District
features pre-school for at-risk children; all day every day Kindergarten;
elementary and secondary talented and gifted programs, special education
programs, advanced placement, honors early start college courses,
vocational and technical classes and school-to-career opportunities as

Loess Hills Area Education Agency -13
The Loess Hills Area Education Agency provides specializzed leadership
and educational services to 31 school districts in Southwest Iowa. Central
offices are located at the Halverson Center for Education in rural Council
Bluffs. Extension offices are located on the campus of Iowa School for
the Deaf and at Peterson Center on South Ninth St. The Agency has five
additional offices located throughout the seven-county service area.

Lewis Central Community School District
The Lewis Central Community School District covers approximately
64 square miles surrounding Council Bluffs. Lewis Central’s enrollment
is approximately 2,705 students, including 1,200 elementary, 700 middle
school and 805 high school. The pupil to teacher ratio is 15:1 in elementary
and 18:1 in middle and high schools.

St. Albert Parochial Schools
St. Albert Schools is a pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade school
system serving the needs of students in Council Bluffs and surrounding

Iowa School for the Deaf
Iowa School for the Deaf is a state, tax-supported school open to all students in Iowa under 21 years of age whose hearing loss is too great for them to get along satisfactorily in a regular public school.
Located on a 120-acre campus on Highway 275 in Council Bluffs, ISD does
not charge residents of Iowa for room, board, laundry, tuition, school
supplies, transportation and limited medical and dental care. The school
is governed by the State Board of Regents.

Tri-Center Community Schools
Tri-Center Community School is a public K-12 school near Neola, Iowa. It is located adjacent to the intersection of I-80 and I-680, on Highway 191.
Colleges and Universities
Iowa Western Community College serves a seven-county area in Southwest
Iowa. With campuses in Council Bluffs, Clarinda and three centers in the
region, more than 50 technology education programs and 30 college transfer
programs are available. It is accredited by the North Central Association
of Colleges and Secondary Schools.
The Iowa Western Continuing Education department offers a variety of courses,
serving 40,000 people. In addition, the college works in conjunction with

Southwest Iowa Regents Resource Center
The Southwest Iowa Regents Resource Center is the region’s link
with Iowa’s three state Universities—Iowa State University, University
of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa. Located in Council Bluffs at the
Iowa School for the Deaf, the Center uses the resources of the Iowa Regents
university system to meet the educational needs of citizens, organizations
and business firms. Through the Center, residents can access a variety
of graduate programs, including education, nursing, agriculture, engineering,
higher education, pharmacy, public management and family and consumer sciences.
Two undergraduate programs, the Regents Bachelor of Liberal Studies and
Iowa State University’s Bachelor of Science in Professional Agriculture,

Buena Vista University
Located on the Iowa Western Community College campus, Buena Vista
offers bachelor degree programs in an accelerated format. Academic programs
include accounting, computer science, elementary education, English, finance

Metropolitan Community College offers over 100 vocational and academic

Bellevue University
Bellevue University offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including

Creighton University
Creighton University, a private, Catholic university operated by
the Jesuits, offers undergraduate degrees in 42 subjects. It also offers
