Electricity

    Council Bluffs is served by MidAmerican Energy which consistently provides reliable service to customers and energy rates below regional or national averages. Council Bluffs is home of one of MidAmerican’s largest coal fired generating stations. The three generating units located on the city’s southern edge have a total capacity of 809 megawatts. MidAmerican is the 42nd largest utility in the United States.
    MidAmerican Energy and the Iowa Utilities Board have chosen Council Bluffs, Iowa, to be the participating community for the MidAmerican Electric Choice project, in which at least 15,000 Iowa families and 2,000 small businesses will have the chance to test competition among electricity providers.

Gas

    Peoples Natural Gas, a division of UtiliCorp United, serves the Council Bluffs area. UtiliCorp serves an eight state region allowing buying clout that ensures its customers the most competitive prices.

Telecommunications

    The metropolitan area is recognized as the national leader in telecommunications and tele-technology industries serving a global market. Council Bluffs is strategically located at the convergence of several national fiber optic networks.

    Council Bluffs local telephone service is offered by US West Communications. US West offers a wide variety of service to our area including frame relay service, caller ID, SHNS , ISDN, SHARP, Command-a-Link, Custom Local Area Signaling, Digital Switchboard Service, Transparent LAN Service, Frame Relay and Synchronous Service Transport.

    Our central location in the country can result in lower long distance cost. Eight Points of Presence serve the area provided by MCI (3), AT&T (2), Wiltel, LDDS, and Sprint. Sewage Treatment

    The City of Council Bluffs operates a secondary sewage treatment plant which serves the area. The plant has an average of 6.7 million gallons per day, with a peak load of 12.8 million gallons per day. The plant has a capacity of 18 million gallons per day.

Water

    The Council Bluffs Water Works provides water service to the area. The community has the luxury of an affordable source of water in the Missouri River. The publicly owned plant has a capacity of 20.0 million gallons with the average consumption of 9.5 million gallons. The elevated storage capacity is 9.7 million gallons.
